Nicktoons -- Battle for Volcano Island DS - Review

Nicktoons -- Battle for Volcano Island (DS)
Ages: Everyone

In the DS version of the game, you must traverse five different stages to defeat Mawgu, the villain, in his volcano lair. In each stage there are two areas – the Field area where you collect crystals and items, and the Action area where you encounter the bosses. The characters SpongeBob (the yellow absorbent one), Danny Phantom and Timmy Turner can be rotated through by using the "Y" button. Cosmo and Wanda float above, giving extra power-ups and often getting in the way of a jump.

Super powers are different for each character, which is pretty standard, but the pickups are also keyed to the characters – which makes the game a bit more complicated. The touch screen is used to activate star and platform icons to open flowers and activate the platforms. Movement is done using the D-pad. All action is done using the touchscreen, the top screen works as sort of a map showing a larger picture of the area. The game has too many gimmicks which makes it more difficult and less fun.

The GBA version of Battle for Volcano Island has so many things to do, places to go, and ways to get there, that you will be playing it forever. Again, you play with SpongeBob, Danny Phantom, Timmy Turner, Patrick Star and each with different skills. In this game, Timmy is the most versatile, he is able to act as a sling shot missile. Patrick can stick to walls, Danny can walk through certain blocks and SpongeBob can clear poisonous ooze and dig. The game is the journey, using all the skills at your disposal.
